5 weeks of Meg.

She's getting cheeky, don't you think?

Henry the cyclist.

Henry and I have been taking his bike (and Meg's stroller) over to the bike trail in Rockford to get our exercise while the weather is still un-frozen. It's a nicely-paved trail that has playgrounds (with restrooms!) along the way that we can stop at. It even goes by a coffee shop so I can get my caffiene fix, and a cookie for Henry. As you can see, he typically zooms up ahead of us (but stops when I yell, "Henry, wait up!" or "Don't run into that nice lady!") And when there is a stop-sign, he always obeys, unlike many licensed Michigan drivers.

Its really cool to spend time with the kids like this. (Just thought you'd like to know.)

Kathy's visit: Before and After

subtitle: Chicks with saws.

Okay, My very best friend Kathy came to visit this weekend. I love her for many reasons. One of them being that she'll fly across Lake Michigan just to play with my kids and hang-out with me for three days. The other is that she always lends her expert advice (and labor) on home improvement/repairs and remodeling.

On Friday, when she arrived, I was saying to her "Hey Kath, I have an idea of how I can get a bigger refrigerator into my kitchen, how much do you think it will cost me?"

And Kathy's answer was "$10 and a case of Diet Coke".

Yes, for $10 in plywood and the correct amount of caffeine, Kathy was able to remove the top cabinet above our old fridge (because, how useless is that cabinet anyways?), slide the remaining cabinetry over to the left, and re-cut the crown moulding. This will allow us to put in a new, larger fridge on the right, which we could desprately use, and which never would have fit in the old, miniscule space otherwise.

Moving the refrigerator also solves a traffic-pattern problem in my kitchen, because if someone is standing in front of the refrigerator with the door open, then nobody can get in or out of the doorway to the living room.

So, props out to Kathy, already back home by noon on Monday. (mmm, when will she return to Rockford, and I wonder which project will "pop up" then?)

And now, I get to go appliance shopping! (also, I'm totally motivated to finally remove the old wallpaper border and repaint the kitchen now that there is a void where the cabinet used to be.)

p.s. - the $10 in plywood was used to level out the gap in the hardwood flooring, since they laid the hardwood around the cabinet base that we moved. We also borrowed my neighbor's compound-miter saw for cutting the angles in the crown moulding and base trim.

The middle child.

And then there's Henry. (You'd think that we didn't have another kid with the latest blogs being about the girls.) Trust me, we wouldn't forget Henry.

He's becoming the typical middle child. Sweet and sassy. Small, yet big. "Mom, I AM a BIG BOY... I don't want to get dressed by myself!" And still very charismatic and charming. He just began soccer, and does a very good job at listening and participating, so far. And he's doing great with Meg. No real outward jealousy, he usually just runs by and says "Hi, baby Meg!" and does his own thing.

"Awww", you're thinking. Right. Don't let his cute ways fool you. He's devising many tactics to make himself known around the house, one which includes him taking off ALL of his clothes. Yes, ALL of them. And he just stands there in the middle of the room. (its really hard not to laugh!)

Its the full Henry.
(sigh)
Really, laughing is the only thing to do. ;-)

To Libby Lu hell and back.

Ok. Let's just say that overall, the trip to Libby Lu was entertaining and fun for Maddie.

But not for her mother.

There were several moments where you had to tell yourself that "I love my kid, and this is fun for her." And just wonder to yourself what could happen next.

Case in point:
1. Guest arriving at our house 30 min. late... which dominoed into me picking up other girls late. I hate being late. This is an omen.

2. Being stuck in traffic on the way to the mall isn't fun for the driver, but fun for the party-goers reencacting High School Musical and Hannah Montana episodes. (what should have been a 45 min. drive took and hour and a half because of the construction on the highway.)

3. Arriving late to our Libby Lu "scheduled appointment" was a nearly a disaster since they were booked for the entire day. We were "squeezed-in" for a 1 p.m. and I was given a stern look of utter distain from the platinum blonde behind the counter.

4. After completing their makeovers, Chelsea says "Mrs. Ripple, I don't feel so good" and pukes right there in the store.

5. Deciding to take Chelsea home (after giving her a Younker's bag to barf in for the car) became the longest car ride ever. The poor girl was still getting sick (yet remained glittery). I called the other parents saying that we'd be late since the other girls still needed to eat lunch, it was already 2:30.

6. Although it wasn't Maddie's first choice, we went to Corner Bar in Rockford for lunch. (who wouldn't take a bunch of 8 & 9 year-olds to a bar?) Afterward we strolled around and got some ice-cream. This was pleasant except for the fact that while goofing around, Maddie dropped her bracelet into the river, and retrieved it, so now she's wet and cold.

7. I call it a wrap and take everyone home. Please, no more for Mrs. Ripple.

We finally get home by 5:20. I announce that I'm going to take a nap.
And I didn't wake up until 1:00 a.m. to feed Meg.

Turning 9.

Maddie turned 9 this week on the 12th. "Her last year in the single digits." as Greg puts it. Of course she has been nine since she's been 4, so next year she'll probably turn 15. We had a cozy, family celebration on Wednesday, with cupcakes and shrimp-poppers. Gourmet, I know. But kids don't want gourmet, they want what they like. Could that be the true definition of gourmet?

On Saturday, I'm taking her to Club Libby Lu with 4 of her girlfriends for obnoxiously-cute makeovers into cheerleaders, divas and princesses. And afterwards we are going to walk the mall and get lunch. "You gotta show off your new look mom!"

I'm taking Tylenol in advance for this one.

more Meg...

I thought I'd post some photos showing all her long, dark hair... since I'm sure it will fall out soon.

1st day of school.

Ahh.. the first day of school. And this time with a uniform! (Which I am so glad that we have again. Its just so much easier and cheaper (yes, even uglier...) it must be that good Catholic thing, keeping you humble or something)

Maddie started at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School last week or just "Assumption", in the 3rd grade. Her teacher is Mrs. Westman, also a Notre Dame Alum, so that's pretty cool. And she's already gone on a GirlScout overnight with her new brownie troop... so Maddie is back in the swing of things.

And Henry started in the Purple Room at his daycare, which is 3-4 year olds. More like a pre-school setting. But he didn't want me to take his picture. He doesn't wear a uniform, except for when he wears one of his football jerseies. Which is actually just about every other day.

Announcing Baby...

(click photo to enlarge)

Well, here she is, our little Meg.

Margaret Kathryn
Born on August 20, 2007
at 3:02 p.m.
7 lbs, 2 oz, 20 inches

After a relatively easy labor and 5 days in the hospital for jaundice, we came home to two excited kids and our own nanny (my mom). The last two weeks we've been working hard to get some meat on her bones (since she wasn't eating too well from being lethargic from the jaundice) and basically taking it easy while I've got the chance (my Mom is here).

I'll upload more pictures when I can....

hellooo fresh paint...

Well, this is the final product. New roof. Newly-repaired cedar boards. Nice new paint job on EVERYTHING. Siding, trim, shutters, gutters, porch railing, porch floors, doors... Everything is so much brighter and cleaner. The cedar-siding color is a light gray-green which changes colors throughout the day. The porch is my favorite part, going from dark gray railings with a burgundy floor, to white railings with a sage-green floor. And the doors are a terra-cotta-brown-orange... something different than everyone else on the block. (they all have red, burgundy, dark green or blue doors)

We are getting a lot of compliments from the neighbors (well, who can blame them?) Before they were looking at the Adams Family house, and now they can gaze at the trendy-new Ripple abode. (To see a photo larger, just click on it...)

I think I'll go have some lemonade on my new porch now....
oh, and still no baby.
yet.

38 weeks, 2 to go.

Here I am, 9 months pregnant. Its been a very long, hot summer and I know I've been neglecting my blog.... and I'm still going to neglect it for a little while so I can, you know, give birth and all that. (Its MY blog, so get your own if you don't like it.)

And I promise to give a recap when I can:
a) find a time when I'm not working, sleeping, mommying, directing painters and growing a baby within my own body.
b) actually recall the events my roller-coaster of a summer. (there were 100's of sit-com moments to be had)
c) have the baby out of me, and am able to sit at my computer and breathe comfortably.
d) all of the above. (notice a pattern here?)

So, perhaps the next entry will be an announcement. We'll see.
Ciao.

Where's the fire buddy?

Henry has adopted a new "rescue worker" uniform... he and Greg have been watching the old "Emergency" TV shows from the 70s on DVD (which Greg swears is the best television show ever, and molded his early childhood). Actually, this is how I got Henry to wear a blue-collared shirt for church on Sunday "its just like the firefighters' shirts Hen!"

So now, Henry has been "putting out fires" all over the house and has been wearing his gear whenever possible. [I however think that the show is sexist and flat, and DO NOT remember it from the 70s... as I have dubbed it a "boy show" without any female lead characters except for the one boring nurse... and the acting harkens to animated Fisher Price action figures... but I digress.]

Yet, it is on almost everyday in my living room, and Greg is looking forward to buying Season 3, because that's when they get the new firetruck.

1st Communion...

Maddie received her 1st Communion this weekend, and I'm exhausted.

I shopped, cooked, cleaned, prepared, primped and pretty-much orchestrated everything. It was like producing a short film. All the actors were here and I just told them where to go and when. I don't think that Martin Scorcese could have done it any better.

Well, everything went as planned. We had perfect weather and Maddie did great. She was very poised at church, even though her little brother was running around everywhere.

It was a nice milestone for her; as she was shown pictures of me, my brother, my mom, my dad, my aunt and grandmother on our 1st Communion days (thanks Gran!)... so she knows that she is carrying-on a family tradition. I think she liked knowing that, and felt special to be a part of it all.

And now we are eating ham for a week.

Awww... brotherly love.

Last night Henry says, to my tummy: "Hi baby. I'm saying Hi to you." (all smiley and cute-like)

Then he says, "Mom, when the baby comes out, I'll give it a big hug."

I say, "Or, you can give her a kiss on the head."

He says, "Ewww, that's yucky!"

I guess the thought of kissing your sister is yucky, even before she becomes your sister.

Say "hi" to baby #3...

Here are baby's first photos, at 20 weeks... she says "hello".

My house is a three-ring circus.

Step right up and see the most amazing show on earth.

Up on the roof, we have 4 men installing new shingles...

Inside Maddie's room and kids' bathroom, we have 2 men tearing-out drywall, repairing the leak from last month. Painter will arrive in a few days to finish...

Down the hall in Henry's room, I am painting, getting ready to switch the kids' rooms so that Henry and Baby can have the larger room.... Maddie is fine with this as long as SHE isn't the one sharing.

In the following week another team of painters will come to paint the hideously ugly master bedroom, a feat of unusual proportions since we have a vaulted ceiling and much tedious priming involved.

And in another stupendeous attempt, I will wave my magic wand and hope that this will be all done before May 5, when we have family in town for Maddie's first communion party.

Did I mention that I went to the ER two-weeks ago for passing-out at a concert? That was a fun ride in th ambulence... no harm done to me or babe, just that I have such LOW blood pressure that I apparently can fall over at any moment. I'm living on the edge.

They say that some women nest, I find it imparetive to remodel, paint and inflict chaos upon myself and those in my immeadiate grasp.

sorry.

the upside of a snowday

Well, we all went out and had some fun in the snow... Maddie and Henry enjoyed their little snow-mound and Greg and I shoveled and threw snowballs at the dog. Kirby mainly spent his time chasing snowflakes.

more #@*^% snow

March 3 - We have about a foot and a half of snow in the driveway... it comes up to my knees.
We will spend the day becoming intimate with our snowshovels or just wait for the plow service... but they're not totally reliable.

On the other hand, our GirlScout cookies came in. So we have 176 boxes to sustain us if the snow gets worse.

So, if I eat your cookies, it was out of survival.

a month has gone by....

Well, what the heck happened to February?
So much was jam-packed into that month, I don't even know where to begin.

Here's the most abbreviated recap:

2/01 tub in kids room clogged... had to call plumber out.
2/02 huuuuge blizzard. record LOW temps for days to come.
2/04 pipes froze in kids bathroom. tub drain also frozen.
2/05 NO SCHOOL - snow day / plumber visits, unfreezes pipes, no luck with tub drain. I use liquid de-icer to get that going.
2/06 NO SCHOOL - snow day / Maddie pukes at Perkins restaurant, in the dining area. - customers were actually mad at us! ;-) Afterwards Maddie announces "I feel better now", which is more than I could say for our waitress who cleaned it up. Yes, she got a big tip.

2/07 Maddie stays home from school (3rd day in a row) Henry goes to daycare, just so he doesn't watch Disney's "Cars" for the 32nd time this week. I also have my 12 week appointment with the OB, she says that I have a good pelvis. How kind.

2/08 Master bath shower explodes (literally) and water main needs to be shut off for whole house...Hello again plumber. I shower at the neighbors that night. (thank you Amy!) In return, I help her install two hallway lights.

2/09 Plumber returns to install new fixtures, that aren't the cheap, corroded crap that came with our house... he also rebuilds all three of our toilets... I am also "Secret Reader" for Maddie's class this day, let's just say that Henry provided most of the entertainment.

2/10 Swimming lessons in the AM, Girlscouts in the PM
2/11-2/14 Greg is out of town
2/16 NO SCHOOL mid-winter break
2/19 NO SCHOOL mid-winter break (I really don't remember ever getting this much school off.)
2/20 Girlscouts & Chinese New Year Dinner w/100 second graders. Delicious, but loud.

2/21 Ants appear in the laundry room. Apparently they have spent all winter tunneling under our garage. Terminix arrives shortly. (hey, we have a contract!)

2/23 Road trip to South Bend for two nights. Greg and I at least get a nice dinner out on Saturday night, even if we have to battle an ice storm... we went to Noma, a new Asian-fusion place... watching the jellyfish tank was worth it, even if I couldn't drink. I did have some good coffee (ooooh!)

2/28 Visit H&R Block to get those taxes done. It feels good to have that behind us.

What will happen in March?

Thursday, February 1, 2007

snow. snow. oh, and more snow.

Not much happening here. But its been snowing non-stop for the past three days and the forcast is showing that its going to keep on snowing through the weekend....

As for us, well, I've been busy and extremely tired. (I guess that making a human takes some energy out of you, wouldn't you think?) I've also been adding up our Girl Scout troop's cookie sales (I'm the troop's Cookie Manager). And now I just have to wait for the shipment of 1,378 boxes of cookies to distribute out of my garage, which will be a fun winter-time activity.

What else? Greg is excited that his team is in the Superbowl this year (the Colts)... we're hoping that they beat the crap out of the Bears. (sorry Heather, I'm from Wisconsin) You never know, it could happen.

Also, I'm hoping to make some more progress on my bathroom this weekend. I've bought new light fixtures and I think I've decided on the color. (i'll have before/after pics to post when I'm done).

So, its a boring update, sue my producers.
